Bob Buchanan

1952 - 2023
We are heartbroken to announce that Bob passed away, June 12th, 2023. Bob loved Winnipeg and all the outdoor art. He loved hearing the stories behind the art and the stories of the artists themselves. He will be missed.

Developed a workaround regarding a technical issue which appeared out of nowhere back in July regarding the proper display of certain characters of text from certain fields of the SQL database onto the web pages. I've been able to clear 95% of these instances by using UTF-8 encoding of the text. The remaining problem for which I am still stumped is with certain special symbols such as ‘Ô’,’è’, ‘é’ and other such characters which used to appear correctly on the web pages but now do not. They ONLY appear incorrectly in certain fields such as the occupant, painters, and mural commentary fields; but NOT in others, such as this one.

March 1, 2010. Our Mapping Interface is back! And fully operational. This time to stay. To accomplish this, this website now runs from its own dedicated server which will alleviate any potential and likely problems of future versions of php and Mapserver being incompatible the the programmimg code of these pages. My website hosting costs are now roughly three times as much as it was before. We gladly accept donations, by the way! The Murals Mapping Interface ROCKS, is the most underrated part of this website and in our humble opinion, is better than Philadephia's, considered by most people (including us) to be the Mural capital of the world. It's an excellent tool for our tourists and visitors to our city, who can use the Mapping Interface to, among other things, print out a self guided tour (virtual or real) with the vital statistics of any and all Murals contained in their current mapping window. We highly recommend a short study of the help page of the Mapping Interface to learn about all of the many features of this state of the art mapping interface. Again we must thank Bob Bruce for his help in getting the Mapping Interface operational again.

Please note that the file is 86Meg in size, and, due to bandwidth issues, I'm reluctant to provide a link here. If you really want to see it, send me email (my address is in the About Us section), and I will gladly either FTP it to you or provide you with a private link for you to view it.

March 8, 2009. Back in December a film crew from tv5 in Montreal came here to shoot a segment of their 1/2 hour show about Manitoba. The name of this popular program is called D'est en Ouest. Their Manitoba episode has now aired, and was briefly available online (it's in French). The Murals segment is the last of the three segments and runs about 8 minutes. Michel St. Hilaire, René Lanthier and myself participated in it. Both Rene and myself think they did an OK job, but we both think we gave them far, far better material than the short bits that they actually use, and we both scratch our heads a bit at a couple of them. All of the Mural still shots you see were provided by me as they were under time constraints. At the end of the day, I am happy with the fact they did this, and anything that shows off Winnipeg's Murals to others.

May 29, 2006. Updated Profile on Mike Valcourt..

As most Winnipeggers have heard, The Bears on Broadway are back(!), in more or less their permanent locations. We've been out and about reshooting the Bears in their new locations as well as plotting their locations on our own Mapping Interface. For those keeping score, 56 of the original 61 Bears are back. The other 5 are in their permanent homes beyond our city's borders: 1 in Gimli (along with another newly minted Bear just for them (!)), 1 at a private cottage in Kenora, 1 on a private farm, 1 in Churchhill, and 1 on the Queen Charlotte Islands, BC.

To date, all Bears but 3 have been shot in their new locations (for those 3 we have used photos at their original locations). This includes a couple that aren't at all easily accessible to the public- we still want you to be able to see them. Those three we are waiting for them to arrive at their locations but have been plotted on our maps. All Winnipeg Bears can be seen, both in the Other Outdoor Art section and also with the Mapping Interface.

Louise and I have loved the Bears Project, and have tried to support it as much as possible. A few words about the Bears Mapping Interface. This mapping tool for the Bears is not intended to replace or even be as good an overview as CancerCare's own Bears map and list which we recommend for the BEST overview of the Bears (download the May 2006 .pdf file from their website). Since there are 2 areas in the city which contain a high density of Bears, we have made our default zoom range 1:750 which works great when viewing any of those bears (any further out range would flood the screen with bear symbols overlapping one another). However, it's rather close in if you're viewing an isolated bear, so you'll have to zoom out (use the Zoom Out tool) to get perspective of where you are. Also, we've used the original Bears numbers from 2005, and not the renumbered Bears in their May 2006 map since the former are the numbers our database uses. Anyway, we sincerely hope you all enjoy the Bears both here and in person for many years to come.

June 10, 2005. Today is the 2nd anniversary of the website. Woo-hooooo! It is by no coincidence that today we also launch the long awaited Murals Mapping Interface to the site. This has been a nine month project for myself and my dear friend, the incomparable Bob Bruce. Bob has already been the single person responsible for making the site work so well from the beginning. Last year about this time he approached me with his vision of a mapping interface for the site. I was lukewarm about the idea at first, but as we began looking at it closer we both got a lot more excited about it. At the beginning of October, we got the good news from the City that they were willing to supply us the use of their street centerline data. Getting this seed data was essential; and they also supplied us with certain river, pond, neighbourhood boundaries, and some of the parks. Yes, I worked hard on it too, especially in adding a lot of embellishment to the maps;(e.g. all of the polygons representing schools, parks, community centres, hospitals and many other points of interest); but that wouldn't have been possible without all the training I got from Bob. For the mapping interface itself, to get the type of dynamics we wanted to have going in these maps with the mural symbols acting as hotspots and relaying mural info from a completely different database than the mapping data required writing and adding custom code at a high level of the open source code- changes which will now be included in future releases of the product. This whole thing really was his vision; and I'm so very pleased with the result.

One of its undocumented and unadvertised features is that it includes all 61 of the Bears on Broadway locations. We only decided to add this a few days ago. Please note that the Bears do not become visible until you reach a scale of 1:2000 or CLOSER; due to the high density of bears, they would flood your mapping window otherwise.

Before using the mapping interface, I urge you to first read the help page (accessible via the ? icon). It will help you get the most out of this comprehensive and state-of-the-art interface. The help page also include sections for acknowledgements and a more complete backstory on our nine month journey to make this a reality. I would only add to this that every time we got a new button or feature to work right without breaking, our excitement increased exponentially. This last week it has been extremely exciting and difficult to wait for the launch date, so having the Bears Project to work on was good to keep our minds off it and hopefully make it even that much better! Enjoy! Your feedback is welcomed. Let us know what you think!

June 5, 2005. Finished makeover of the banner at the top of each page, replacing the tabs denoting each section of the website with new buttons; including a Home button which we didn't have before. We have now switched web hosting companies to one right here in Winnipeg who we like very much: John Lange at Open IT. All of the above changes have been necessary in preparation for the launch of a major enhancement to the site, which you will be able to see here on Friday June 10th. You're going to love it, and we can hardly wait!

May 26, 2005. Added over 100 on-site photos of the 61 Bears on Broadway locations unveiled to the public today in the Other Outdoor Art section. Bears on Broadway is an incredible fundraising project for CancerCare Manitoba in which the business community, artistic community and the wider community at large have worked and imagined together in such an innovative manner. The bears will be on exhibit from now straight through October, and all but 2 are within a short 15-20 minute walk of one another along Broadway between Main and Osborne. There is also one at the Winnipeg Art Gallery (also within walking distance), the Polo Park shopping centre, and the Airport. Each bear weighs 4 tons and stands 7 feet tall. For lots more information on the Bears, go to http://www.bearsonbroadway.com/

February 14, 2005. Added a long overdue Arist Profile for Jill Sellers. I don't consider this yet to be a complete profile and hope to add to it in the next month or so. Recently I've been corresponding with Lionel Gripon who operates a Mural site for France with a special emphasis on trompe l'oeil work. I was astonished to hear from him that he was a fan of this site. I LOVE his site; so we have now decided to be SISTER or TWIN websites as he and I seem to share exactly the same aims; he for France, and I for Winnipeg. I urge you to please take a little time to visit his tremendous site, http://murals.trompe-l-oeil.info and to see some amazing European Murals. He has over 3500 photos, some video, and you can sent virtual email postcards with any Mural of your choosing.

November 6, 2004. My good friend Bob Bruce (php Programmer extraordinaire) and I have now just begun what we hope in four to six months will be a MAJOR enhancement to the site. It's a major undertaking for us (we've probably already put close to 100 hours into it) and we're pretty thrilled about it. Let's just say that if you like the website NOW, just wait 'till you see what's coming... For those who've inquired about the absence of a Mural on the site, please keep in mind that we generally don't post a new Mural to the site until it is COMPLETELY FINISHED and signed by the artist. However, by saying this, we do NOT want to deter any of you spotters out there reporting a new Mural site! Added new photos to reflect the addition of Zookhy's bike to the Zookhy Mural at 635 Sargent (Jill Sellers). June 1, 2004. Mural of the Year 2003. During the entire month of May, a very distinguished Panel of 34 Independent Judges has been busily at work reviewing all of the amazing crop (62 in all) of new Murals and Outdoor Art produced in 2003 and then submitting their selections for the 2003 Mural of the Year! A good time was had by all, we think (or so their feedback suggests!). They were all earnest, impartial, and we would like to publicly thank them for their efforts. They came from all walks of life, but shared a love of Winnipeg's Murals and also were people who all care about our great city.

We will be announcing the Panel's ultimate selection soon, and hope to generate some publicity for both the Artist(s) and the Client for this outstanding Mural. I will be away from Winnipeg until Saturday June 12th and will announce the Panel's ultimate selection for Mural of the Year 2003 as the date for the Award Luncheon draws closer.

May 30, 2004. Added 562 Balmoral to the Other Outdoor Art section.

May 17, 2004. It gives me great pleasure to have now added the commentary, backstory and supporting photos for Winnipeg's oldest existing Mural: the Long Tramp Mural at 2579 Portage (the former Carman Ruttan apothecary Drug Store). The research into this historic Winnipeg landmark has been a top priority for me since launching this site; and has been a real joy for me for the past month or so since I've been able to devote more time to it. In fact, two of the interviews I conducted for this piece were done over a year ago. Enjoy.
Added comments by Teresa Kuzyk of Gordon Bell School on the Peace and Justice Mural at 3 Borrowman (2) and the street level cityscape Mural 3 Borrowman (1) (Scott James). Added a mini-slideshow (using javascript) of 25 of the 2003 walls at the bottom of the entrance page. I'll keep this there and update the slides with newer walls so long as the javascript function doesn't interfere with anyone being able to access the site because of it.

April 29, 2004. Added comments by Talia Potash (Art City) for the Art City Murals at 618 Broadway and 195 Young. Added comments by Richard Manoakeesick for his walls at 291 Selkirk and 319 Selkirk. Added comments by Eddie Ayoub for his wall at 1165 Henderson Highway.Moved 925 Portage (Jeanette Jerome, Bell Fosh Signs) to the RIP section.

April 16, 2004. Added comments by Tom Andrich for his Ethiopia Mural at 616 Ellice. Added comments by Trudy Turner and Erika Wiebe on the Zoohky Mural at 635 Sargent (Jill Sellers). Added comments for City Councillor Mike Pagtakan's Mural at 1041 Aberdeen. Added comments by Helenå Jaworski for her wall at 699 Broadway, and brief comments on the Miller's Meats Mural at 590 St. Mary's (James Culleton).

March 19, 2004. Added comments by Charlie Johnston for his Adam Beach Mural at 590 Ellice. Added comments by Jennifer Johnson Pollock and Mandy van Leeuwen for the Gar Gillies Mural at Second Encore Music at 1349 Portage and the Costa Rica wall at 546 Sargent.

March 6, 2004. Added Artist Profile for Reid Edgeworth. Added comments and backstory by Reid Edgeworth and Ida Toews for the Millennium Gardens Mural at 1571 Henderson. Added comments by Mandy van Leeuwen and Jennifer Johnson Pollock for their work at 51 Blenheim (Glenwood School), 859 Elm , 187 Garry (4) (Windsor Hotel), 1917 Logan (The Floor Show), Osborne underpass(3) and 1333 Portage (Pet Traders). Be sure to watch the upcoming special entitled "Murals of Winnipeg" by CKY Television photojournalist Ken Gable. It will air on Channel 5, Sunday March 28th at 6:30 pm; and then rebroadcasts Saturday April 3 at 5pm. This special focuses on some of Winnipeg's finest Muralists: how they technically produced each piece, and where their vision comes from.

Added 2003 locations at Murray Tent & Awning, 653 Sargent (Ian August, Andy Bart); and 3 photos at C & J Food, 1041 Aberdeen (Mike Pagtakhan). Moved 326 St. Mary's to the RIP section. Fixed a few Mapquest location map links that were broken due to changes on their site. We'd like to thank Bert Schaffer, who travels the streets in his line of business here in Winnipeg, for his interest in the site and for acting as an extra set of eyes out there! In December, there were 2838 visits by 1883 unique visitors to the site using 4.38 Gigabytes of bandwidth; including 473 from a Google search, 106 from MSN and 102 from Yahoo. December 11, 2003. We are very excited that Take Pride Winnipeg's Mural program has won the innovation award for beautification and community improvement at the 50th annual Keep America Beautiful conference in Washington, D.C; a much deserved honour. Please note, too, that the first of two planned new half-hour documentaries on Winnipeg's Murals by CKY videojournalist Ken Gabel will air on CKY Television's Manitoba Moments early in 2004. Air dates will be posted when we get them. This one will focus on Winnipeg's Muralists. A second new special to be aired later in the spring will examine the impact and benefits of Winnipeg's Murals. Added location at 461 Cumberland (1) (Alan Williams, Brian J. Hall). November 2, 2003. Murals site moved to bigger server and entrance page counter reset to zero (no way around this). The counter actually gives only a very rough and actually a quite conservative estimate of the traffic as most search engine search results are linking inside the site directly to the main section where all the information is, bypassing the entrance page. Here are some web stats for the site. For the month of October, this site had 1585 visits from 855 unique visitors, who used 2.1 Gigs of bandwidth while on the site. The site had 243 clickthrough visits resulting from a Google search, 89 from Yahoo, and 37 from MSN search engines. There were also a whopping 58 visitors coming from Travel Manitoba's website. Thanks to them and to The City of Winnipeg's site for linking to this one.

October 19, 2003. Added the following 2003 locations: 221 Panet (Dwayne Ball); 1917 Logan (Jennifer Johnson Pollock, Mandy van Leeuwen); 4 photos at 270 Sherbrook (Charlie Johnston, Sarah Johnston); 661 Wall (Pat Lazo, Fred Thomas); 996 St.Mary's (Frank Megyesi); 312 DesMeurons (1) (Frank Megyesi); and 458 Balmoral (Edwin Bear, Hank Williams). Added 3 additional photos (#s 7, 8, & 9) pertaining to the Millennium Gardens Mural at 1571 Henderson.

October 17, 2003. Added counter to entrance page. Fixed obscure glitch which took us 4 months to find; having to do with the synchonization of horizontal thumbs to current selected location in the address lookup, and only was a problem in rare, contrived and unusual (unlikely to be encountered by any web visitor), but understood circumstances. Added additional programming code and Java Scripting, eliminating the need for the "go" buttons in all sections of the site. Other than the search "go" button in the main section (which is always required since searches may be along one or multiple criteria) the go button will now only load if the code detects that the website visitor's browser has Java Script support turned off or has Active Scripting disabled (in such a case, the go button is needed and thus will appear). Added 3 additional views of 583 Ellice with comments/backstory by Marla Braga.

October 7, 2003: Copied 590 Ellice (Signs & Wonders) to the RIP section. Added mural comments by Steve Wilson (Graffiti Art Programming) for their 15 walls on the site. Added 2003 location at 120 Isabel and comments by Dennis Bell. Added comments for 3 of Dennis' other walls; 988 Main, 1880 Alexander, and Whellams Lane (1).

August 24, 2003: Fixed minor issue (Murals section) with the function of the "search" reset button. Previously, not all search fields were being reset to null after hitting "reset" and a second click of the button was necessary to accomplish this. Fixed another minor issue (Murals section) having to do with multiple views of a single location. Previously the location lookup field identifying that location was unintentionally being reset to null when a user selected some alternate view of that location other than the default view/establishing shot.

August 23, 2003: Fixed issue (woo hoooo!) with Mural of the Year section- formerly it would not load correctly if entered immediately following any search in the Murals section. Also corrected an anomaly in the 'displaying results' string for the horizonal thumbs on this page. We've designed this page to be able to handle the possible scenario of up to a four-way tie for Mural of the Year in any future year. If there's a FIVE-way tie, though, I'll have to shut the site down... ;-)

August 18, 2003: Added 2003 locations at 562B St. Mary's Rd. by Mike Pourier and Shaun Polet; 635 Sargent by Jill Sellers; 410 Aberdeen (with short comments) by Tiffany Seymour. Added location at 58 Albert. Added Chris Velasco's comments on his three walls.
